Description:

West Africa, Liberia / Ivory Coast, Dan peoples, ca. early 20th century CE. A fine wood and cloth mask known as a deangle, with a high domed forehead, bulging eyes with narrow slits, raised oblong mouth, and a pointed chin. A rolled-up cotton cloth headdress or coiffure is secured onto the head via cords and a resin or pitch application near the eyes. The wood is a deep brown hue with kaolin white added across the eyes, an iron loop is set in the center of the brow, and the peripheries are pierced for attaching this mask to the wearer or costume. Size: 10" L x 6.5" W (25.4 cm x 16.5 cm); 13.5" H (34.3 cm) on included custom stand.
