West Africa, Nigeria, Yoruba peoples, ca. early 20th century CE. A female Ere Ibeji figure, hand carved to represent the female member of a pair deceased twins, adorned with incised markings representing scarification and other bodily details. According to the Yoruba, twin effigies are believed to influence the daily lives of family members. As such, they are traditionally honored with prayers and libations. Custom , block stand. Size: figure itself measures 9.25" H (23.5 cm); 10.75" (27.3 cm) on stand.

For context, an Ibeji is an orisha, a holy spirit in the Yoruba religion. Twins are thought to possess magical properties in the Yoruba culture, and are protected by the sacred deity Shango.
