Description:

West Africa, Nigeria, Cross River Region, Igbo (Ibo) peoples, ca. mid-20th century CE. A wonderful wood mask, hand-carved and painted with vibrant pigments and an expressive countenance to create an evocative presentation. Crowned by a pair of braids, the visage presents a tall forehead, slit eyes beneath thick brows, a broad nose, and an open mouth above a pointed chin, all supported by a tapering column. Raised striations and triangular motifs adorn the face, representing ceremonial scarification. Secured to the top of the performer’s head by a basketry cap, this head crest was worn with a flowing gown that swirled into motion during ikem - a play or dance for venerating ancestors - and at initiations and agricultural rites. Size: 6.4" W x 14.3" H (16.3 cm x 36.3 cm)
