Description:

Africa, Nigeria, Igbo, early 20th century CE. A wonderful mask used in the Okperegede Masquerade, a festival that commemorates the reunion of a living community with its ancestors. The abstract visage was expertly carved and painted to present wonderful details. Note the meticulously delineated eyes (with eyeballs) framed by elegant arched brows that meet at the bridge of a dramatically pointed nose, above parted lips revealing teeth, the ensemble of facial scarification marks (a series of horizontal frets beside each eye, and grand curved motifs flanking the nose and mouth - each embellished with triangular cutouts and black and white pigment), as well as that elaborate coiffure. A wonderful example. Size: 13.5" L x 8.75" W (34.3 cm x 22.2 cm)

Provenance: ex-Adeon Gallery, Chicago, Illinois, USA acquired prior to 1970
