Africa, Sierra Leone, Kissi culture, ca 1st quarter of the 20th century CE. Fabulous early wooden carving of a nude female. Showing wonderful fluid motion in her lower legs, she holds her hand to her lower abdomen, and while her body is nude, she presents with scarification on her torso. Her face is rendered with a characteristic jutting lower jaw as well as eyes, nose, and mouth in high relief. The body has developed an almost crusty patina that adds to the beauty of this stunning piece! Size: 7" L x 8.25" W x 28" H (17.8 cm x 21 cm x 71.1 cm); 30.5" H (77.5 cm) on included custom stand.
