Description:

West Africa, Nigeria, Ogoni peoples, ca. 20th century CE. An interesting, hand-carved wooden mask depicting the unpainted face of a person with narrowed eyes, small nose, mouth, and ears, and a distinctive face that meets at an almost right angle along the line of the nose. The face is capped by a huge double-coiffure that towers above it. It has no signs of scarification, indicating that it is depicting not a native member of the Ogoni tribe, but an outsider. Size: 3.4" L x 5" W x 21.8" H (8.6 cm x 12.7 cm x 55.4 cm)

Provenance: Adeon Gallery, Nick Poolos, Chicago, Illinois, USA, acquired before 1970
