Lot 98
Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Teke/Yaka, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A carved wooden figure surrounded by fetish materials encased in painted cloth with a serene visage comprised of closed eyes, boldly delineated ears, nose, and open mouth, and an elaborate, high coiffure. The carved figure displays traits typical of Teke figures including the enlarged head, slightly bent legs, and a central region for Bilongo (magical substances) which bestows the figure with power. The shape of the bilongo attached to the body usually indicates its function. This figure is surrounded by a barrel-shaped Bilongo and as such is most likely a Matomba figure believed to have apotropaic functions - the power to thwart evil or bad luck. The figure is finely carved with an intact Bilongo, and some remains of red pigment. Size: 4.5" W x 12" H (11.4 cm x 30.5 cm)
