Description:

South America, Brazilian Amazon, Wai Wai (Wai-Wai) Indians, ca. mid 20th century CE. A lovely bark cloth clothing item, either a waist band or a simple shirt to wrap around one's chest. The rectangular panel is folded along the bottom, and both ends are sewn together with red-orange string. The exterior is painted in black pigment with a decorative register of intersecting linear bands which form diamonds and triangles, and a colorful group of feathers projects from the top. Size: 21.5" W x 7.25" H (54.6 cm x 18.4 cm).

  • Condition: Panel is folded in quarters with creases along the folds. Light desiccation to bark cloth, and some fading to areas of pigmentation, otherwise intact and very good. Light earthen deposits throughout. Old inventory label secured to one side.
