Description:

Central Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Bakwa Luntu culture, ca. mid 20th century CE. A fascinating anthropomorphic figure carved from dark wood, depicting what appears to be a woman giving birth. She has a large head, with huge, deepset eyes, a small nose and mouth, and a pointed chin; this shape is mirrored in another shape between her legs that looks like the head of a baby emerging. She is clearly pregnant; her hands are at a belt on her waist and she stands with her legs spread apart, one foot slightly striding forward. Size: 4.05" W x 12.75" H (10.3 cm x 32.4 cm); 13.7" H (34.8 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex New York collection of Victor Johnson, acquired in the 1960s and then by descent
