Description:

East Africa, Tanzania, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden colonial figure made from a warm umber wood upon an integral pedestal base. The man appears to wear western style trousers and shirt, and one hand casually rests at his waist as if in a pocket, and an ungulate or goat fur hide is wrapped around his chest. The colonial figure style is a native depiction of the Europeans, and these figures are often lighthearted and take on European styles of dress. Sometimes they were placed outside a traditional medicine healers' place of business to advertise that their services were so wonderful that even the Europeans flocked to use them. Size: 6" L x 4" W x 19.5" H (15.2 cm x 10.2 cm x 49.5 cm); 21" H (53.3 cm) on included custom stand.
