Description:

**Originally Listed At $450**

Native American / First Nations, Northeastern United States & Canada, Quebec province / Maine / New York, Iroquois / Eastern Algonquians, ca. early 20th century CE. This basketry cradle features ash tree splints that are pinched and curled to create a textured surface, sometimes referred to as a fancy, curly, porcupine, or ribbon weave. A distinctive "checkboard over and under" weave is also present, created using ash wood splints from the under-bark of the black ash tree. While determining the tribal affiliation of an older basketry item can be challenging, this example is clearly from the Northeast and was likely made as a market item or souvenir. Size: 23" L x 9" W x 9" H (58.4 cm x 22.9 cm x 22.9 cm)

Provenance: private Houston, Texas, USA collection; ex-private Houston, Texas, USA, collection, acquired before 2000
