Description:

Oceania, Fiji Islands, ca. mid 20th century CE. A fine example of a carved wooden club featuring an acorn-shaped striking surface incised on both sides with dense cross hatching and geometric motifs; this incising continues a short length down the handle. The handle itself is narrow, terminating in a short bar to make it easier to grip. The lower part of the handle is made from a separate piece of wood inserted into the main body and held in place with a natural adhesive. Fiji is famous for its wide variety of war clubs, and ritualized warfare is an important part of their history. Clubs were also used as status items, owned by chiefs and priests. Size: 7.9" W x 29.8" H (20.1 cm x 75.7 cm)
