Description:

Oceania, Polynesia, Fiji Islands, ca. first half of the 20th century CE. A broad, spade-shaped fan constructed from strands of coconut leaves (drau ni niu) and coconut sennet fibers (magimagi) in a traditional three-ply braiding technique known as tali tolu. Dark, naturally dyed fibers are woven into the fan body and create a visually appealing bi-chrome presentation. The points along the lateral sides as well as the top enable ample air movement given its structural flexibility when fanned via the tightly woven handle underneath. Size: 13.125" W x 15.125" H (33.3 cm x 38.4 cm)
