Southeast Asia, Philippines, Spanish Colonial influence, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A hand-carved wood santo of John the Baptist displaying glass eyes and dressed in his traditional camel hair robe beneath a lengthy cloak as he holds a slender shepherd's staff with both hands. Adorned in liberal remains of brown, tan, green, and red pigments over white gesso, the religious ascetic stands barefoot atop an integral plinth as a centrally-parted coiffure frames his lustrous eyes, petite mouth, and forked beard. Size: 4.5" W x 11.3" H (11.4 cm x 28.7 cm)

  • Condition: Left forearm reattached with some loss and possible restoration near elbow. Chipping in areas as well as nicks and abrasions, all commensurate with age. Nice remains of pigment and rich patina.
