**First Time At Auction**

Europe, France, 20th century. A patinated brass sculpture of the ancient Greek lyric poet Anacreon, after the 19th century sculpture by Eugene Guillaume (1822-1905) housed in the collection of the d'Orsay Museum, Paris, France. Seated with crossed legs, Anacreon who is best known for celebrating love and wine, gazes at a bird drinking from the chalice in his raised right hand while holding a string instrument in his left hand. Anacreon presents with a handsome bearded visage, a bare muscular chest, and voluminous folds of a himation cascading over his crossed legs and lower body. The sculpture is mounted on a stone base. Size: 18.5" H (47 cm); 19.75" H (50.2 cm) on included custom stand.

Eugene Guillaume started "Anacreon" when he was at the Villa Medici and completed it in 1851. The City of Paris purchased a plaster maquette of the statue that was exhibited at the 1852 Paris Salon. In addition, a marble version was exhibited at the 1878 Paris Exposition and the 1882 Exhibition in Vienna. Guillaume's "Anacreon" was shown in the Paris hotel de ville from 1895 to 1936, and is currently in the Musee d'Orsay's allee centrale des sculptures.
