Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Borneo, eastern Kalimantan, Kayanic Dayak complex, ca. first half of the 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden mask depicting a stylized anthropomorphic countenance painted with brown, white, and red, pigment. The face bears almond-shaped eyes with openwork pupils, a slender nose with shallow nasolabial folds above thin lips, broad ears with upper perforations, and an applied patch of hair for a beard. This mask perhaps represents an ancestral figure to whom the mask is meant to show respect and remembrance. Lucite display stand for photography purposes only.   • Condition: Repair to upper area of left ear with iron pins. Minor nicks and abrasions to face, peripheries, and verso, with fading to pigment, and very light encrustations. Nice remains of pigment throughout, and nice patina on verso.
