Description:

**First Time At Auction**

East Asia, Japan, Meiji to Showa Period, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. An intimidating wood mask from Noh theatre representing a demon or a kishin with inlaid brass fangs, teeth, and eyes, as well as thick wisps of horsehair forming the beard and moustache. Crowned by a pair of horns, his expressive visage displays almost-comically exaggerated features, such as huge eyebrows that project from his face, chiseled cheek bones, a broad nose with flared nostrils, crossed eyes, and folding, fleshy wrinkles that cover every inch of his skin. Masks like this example are used in the Noh theatre tradition as well as Shinto ritual kagura dances. A marvelous example of history and thespianism! Size (without moustache): 5.8" W x 9.5" H (14.7 cm x 24.1 cm)
