Description:

Native American, Pacific Northwest Coast, Kwakwaka' Wakw, ca. late 20th century CE. Signed Sarah Robertson and titled Kwakiutl Wolf on the base. A very special box by Sarah Robertson, made from a single piece of red cedar. Robertson is a member of the Kwakiutl (Kwakwaka’wakw) First Nation with part of her heritage linked to the Coast Salish. Born in Nanaimo, a small fishing village on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada, she first studied with her father, master carver Alfred Robertson. The technique for making such boxes requires great skill and patience. First, very precise lines are cut into the wood; this step is called kerfing. Then, the box is steamed and bent along the lines. Each of the four sides of this box was carved with an image of a wolf that was then painted in traditional red and black hues. The wolf is understood by some nations to be a transformer. Wolves are respected for their agility, strength, capacity for devotion, and intelligence. Size: 5.3" L x 5.5" W x 5" H (13.5 cm x 14 cm x 12.7 cm)
