Description:

Oceania, Papua New Guinea, ca. mid 20th century CE. A large wooden shield with an overall rectangular composition and finely-carved details that form a symmetrical design - an abstract depiction of a dual-ended creature with a mutual diamond-shaped midsection. Each half of the creature has two curved arms, a diamond-shaped neck which forks into two multi-branched projections, and a lobed head with two sharply curved, tendril-like horns. The figure itself is outlined in black with accompanying red details atop a white ground. Abstract geometric designs adorn the peripheral edges of the shield, and six small drilled perforations have raffia fed through them. The back has a sturdy, unpainted handle. Size: 15.7" W x 66" H (39.9 cm x 167.6 cm)
