Southern Africa, Madagascar, Central Highlands, Zafimaniry tribe, ca. first half of the 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden shutter or door used on domiciles or storage facilities such as granaries. The rectangular door has a convex obverse face decorated with carved motifs in two separate panels. The top panel has five carved stars surrounded by abstract anthropomorphic and zoomorphic figures, and the lower panel has an anthropomorphic figure flanked by a pair of large lizards. A small tang protrudes up from the top of one corner, and remains of a second tang are visible along the lower corner. Size: 15.75" W x 30.4" H (40 cm x 77.2 cm).

Provenance: Estate of R. Pearson, Denver, Colorado, USA; Mr. Pearson collected from the third quarter of the 20th century until he passed away.
