Description:

Latin America, Mexico, Guerrero, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A wonderful wood mask depicting man with a forked beard and sweeping gray eyebrows above heavily lashed eyes, a naturalistic nose, and a down-turned mouth. His gently parted lips reveal a top row of tab-shaped teeth. Sometimes called "barbones" or "bearded old men," masks of this type have been said to serve varying functions such as being used in the "rain-petitioning dance," serving as Carnival masks, representing the god Tlaloc, depicting a European man, and being used to chase Spaniards out of their pueblos in the mountains of Guerrero. Size: 6.4" W x 9" H (16.3 cm x 22.9 cm); 10.75" H (27.3 cm) on included custom stand.
