Description:

Latin America, Mexico, ca. 20th century CE. A wonderful iron retablo depicting Saint Michael or San Miguel the Archangel visiting souls in purgatory. Saint Michael is dressed traditionally as a soldier with a helmet and sword, holding his scales in one hand which he uses to weigh the souls of the dead. Michael is the archangel who leads God's armies against Satan in the Book of Revelation, and it is he who defeats Satan during the war in heaven. Here, however, he is depicted in his other role which is as a guide who frees souls from purgatory and brings them to paradise. Note the fascinating diversity of souls who anguish in the flames - a bearded man in a bishop's hat, a sensually-depicted woman, and a man in a turban. Size: 9.4" W x 11.3" H (23.9 cm x 28.7 cm)
