Latin America, Mexico, Michoacan, 20th century CE. This is a handcarved and painted black wooden mask with the nose as a separate attachment. It also has animal skin sideburns. This mask is from the Dance Negritos, a traditional dance that takes place every year from December 24 to February 2. The dance honors the memory of the people of African descent who were brought to the New World as slaves by colonial powers. Size: 5.5" L x 7.5" W x 9.25" H (14 cm x 19 cm x 23.5 cm).

Provenance: Ex-private A. Carmichael collection, New Orleans, acquired in Mexico City in 1980.
