Description:

West Africa, Nigeria, Ibibio people, ca. 20th century CE. A rare and quite intriguing wooden dance crest comprised of a helmet-shaped calotte with a central projecting head, surrounded by 6 additional heads with long necks reminiscent of octopus tentacles. All 7 heads present stylized visages with bulging eyes, incised nostrils, open mouths, and striations of ceremonial scarification. The largest at the center boasts metal teeth and a horizontally ribbed neck. The Ibibio live in southeastern Nigeria on the Niger River Delta. Wealth in this society came largely from the sale of palm oil and the social dominance of certain individuals was reinforced through ritual dances that incorporated masks like this one. Some of these masks, however, also had spiritual significance. Size: 15" W x 15.3" H (38.1 cm x 38.9 cm); 20.5" H (52.1 cm) on included custom stand.
