Description:

Africa, Nigeria, Igbo peoples (Ezza or Izzi subgroup), early 20th century CE. This is a striking mask with human and animal features. It is a dance crest, made to be worn horizontally atop the head. It has a human face with open mouth and bared teeth; the face has marks that may be scarification or tattoos; atop the head is close-cropped hair and curled horns that resemble those of wild sheep. A soft ring made of woven plant fibers would have cushioned this mask atop the head; it may once have been decorated with perishable items like feathers, quills, and hair. Most animal masks from this culture are the Ogbodo, made to look like elephants; that this is a different type of animal makes it fairly unique! Size: 7.5" W x 15.25" H (19 cm x 38.7 cm)
