Description:

Pacific Northwest, Native American (USA and Canada), Haida peoples, ca. early 20th century CE. An amazing carved wood rattle in the form of a bird. The body is comprised of two sections, the lower section beneath the wings hollowed and filled with pebbles. Tiny holes drilled at the corners of each half allow the two pieces to be tied together, as they are now, with cord. A tubular handle/tail projects from the rear; it is polished but uncarved and unpainted, giving it a clean look. The artist has carved the wings as a flat, roughly trapezoidal shape with gently pointed tips and a motif of an eye in the center of the wing. The body of the bird also has eye motifs on either side. The rounded head has wonderful incised and painted details including large black eyes, crest feathers, and a pointed, slender beak. Quite an elegant form, and musical too! Custom stand. Size: 11.625" L x 3.75" W (29.5 cm x 9.5 cm); 9.625" H (24.4 cm) on included custom stand.
