Description:

Oceania, Papua New Guinea, East Sepik River region, Abelam, ca. mid-20th century CE. A lovely mask of an openwork form that is woven from natural reed fibers and painted with thick brown, yellow-orange, pink, and white pigments. The mask has a pair of wide eyes, a slender nose that extends from forehead to upper lip, concentric ovoid rings comprising the cheeks and 'face,' and a semicircular top brim with a zigzagging central design. The open verso allows the mask to be worn during festivals devoted to the yam, the most important crop of the Abelam people. Size: 6.75" W x 13.3" H (17.1 cm x 33.8 cm)

  • Condition: Small loss to area beneath one eye as shown. Minor loosening and fraying to some fiber strands, light chipping and fading to areas of original pigment, and light bending to overall form of peripheries. Nice traces of original pigment across face.
