Description:

Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Wosera area, Arapesh peoples, ca. 1940s CE. A wonderful carved-wood dance mask in ovoid form displaying an elongated visage. Adorned in a deep shade of maroon, this charming vizard presents with deep-set, openwork eyes of annular form, a lengthy nose with high nostrils, a pair of slender ears, and a petite mouth fixed in a smile. A square aperture has been drilled horizontally through his nose, perhaps to suspend fine ornaments of shells, bones, and other materials. The visage has been decoratively carved to be slightly recessed at its center while displaying a raised area at its forehead and chin to create the appearance of a high brow, short chin beard, and moustache. Six lovely circular holes ornament the periphery of the mask, allowing it to be strapped to one's head, and a small cuboid finial sits at the top of the stylized vizard. Size: 6.75" W x 16" H (17.1 cm x 40.6 cm); 19.75" H (50.2 cm) on included custom stand.
