Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Sepik River Region, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. This is a dense raffia skirt with a thick woven waist cord with dozens of braided cords suspended in a graduated arrangement, with longer strands at the center. The braided cords are tied off near the top leaving most of the length a loose fringe of fiber strands. The waist band and tassel ends are dip dyed black while the rest is a warm red hue. This type of skirt was probably used for ceremonies or festivals- we often see these skirts attached to large masks as parts of elaborate dance costumes. Size: 35" L x 15" W (88.9 cm x 38.1 cm)

Provenance: private Englewood, Colorado USA collection; ex-Martin Boxer collection; ex-Komor Gallery, New York City, New York USA circa 1965

  • Condition: Active flaking to fibers and fraying to terminal waist cord ends. Bending and creasing to lower unbraided fiber strands due to storage. Losses and missing several braided cords but does not detract from the overall presentation. Waist band is tightly woven, and skirt is in overall great condition.
