Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Buka Island, ca. mid to late 20th century CE. A hand-woven rattan basket with an arched handle and tightly fitted lid. The cylindrical body rests on a flat base, and the walls taper slightly inward to a board brim with a circular opening. The lid contains a lip that fits perfectly and flush inside the mouth. The weaving is extremely tight and well made, following a zig zag and triangular black on brown pattern. Size (w/ handle): 7.5" Diameter x 13.25" H (19 cm x 33.7 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Bishop Family Trust collection, the Trust of the late Bill Bishop, a noted antiquarian with shops in Scottsdale, Arizona and Allenspark, Colorado, USA, acquired before 2010
