Description:

Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Western Highlands, Maring people, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A large shield of a rectangular form with rounded corners. The front of the shield is decorated in thick red and white pigments with a large central white diamond surrounded with alternating red and white triangles. The painted obverse is studded with dozens of small wooden pegs, with a sight hole drilled through the inner tip of the top-right white triangle, and a trio of drilled holes retain the original cloth handle. Size: 19.125" W x 60.75" H (48.6 cm x 154.3 cm).

Provenance: private Tucson, Arizona, USA collection, acquired between 1950 and 1985
