Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Sepik River region, ca. mid-20th century CE. A giant wooden head from an ancestor sculpture featuring spiraling eyes of inlaid conch shell granting a mesmerizing and hypnotic presentation. Boasting liberal remains of red and white pigment, the elongated visage presents with traditional stylized characteristics of Papua New Guinea, such as a broad, flared nose, a long forehead, and smiling lips, all flanked by a pair of hoop shell earrings. A prominent widow's peak surmounts the face, topped by a tapering coiffure or headdress and a knotted piece of rattan or tree bark. Alternatively, that the base, the slender neck is tied with a metal wire necklace. Perforations around the periphery of the face suggest the piece was once adorned with additional ornaments. Size: 12.9" W x 32.5" H (32.8 cm x 82.6 cm)

Provenance: private Constance McCormick Fearing estate, Montecito, California, USA, acquired before 2004
