Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Middle Sepik River region, Abelam peoples, ca. first half of the 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden figure of a tall, slender form standing atop a pair of delineated legs. Nude and covered in brown mud pigment, the figure presents with slender arms draped down his sides to his hips, narrow shoulders, and a squat neck. His elongated head bears a slender nose, full lips above a protruding chin, and eyes inlaid with petite shells, all beneath a highly stylized bird with an enormous beak perched atop the man's rounded brow. This figure is perhaps representative of an ancestor as a sign of remembrance and respect. Size: 2.4" W x 24.75" H (6.1 cm x 62.9 cm); 26.625" H (67.6 cm) on included custom stand.

  • Condition: Repair to head of bird, with small chips and light adhesive residue along break lines. Losses to toes on proper right foot as shown. Abrasions and chipping to surfaces and some painted areas, with a few stable fissures to figure's body and limbs, and petite chips to inlaid shell eyes. Great preservation to overall form and nice remains of pigment in scattered areas.
