Oceania, Trobriand Islands, Massim peoples, ca. mid-20th century CE. An exquisite and sizable dance club, hand-carved from hard wood and painted in black and white pigments. This gorgeous example showcases a long and slender form with a rounded pummel bulb that cuts inward on one side, a thick handle, a flared shoulder, a thick rectangular body, and a tapering head. The front of the body has a carved rectangle of abstract geometric decoration featuring several registers of triangular patterns, swirling motifs, and undulating striations, all brought forth with applied white pigment. Size: 2.75" W x 33" H (7 cm x 83.8 cm); 35" H (88.9 cm) on included custom stand.
