Description:

West Africa, Burkina Faso, Lobi peoples, ca. early 20th century CE. A head on a thick, conical neck, with an elongated, rounded skull, large ears, and a sensitive face with a raised chinstrap beard. There is some evidence for scarification marks at the temples and forehead. The Lobi create distinctive carvings of heads, sculpted to be fixed into the ground to mark shrines and other important locations; they are also sometimes mounted outside houses, acting as guardian figures.
