Description:

Micronesia, Yap, Caroline Islands, ca. mid-20th century CE. Made of highly polished hardwood, and featuring realistic rigging and a leather fishing platform, this is a special model of an outrigger canoe. The long canoe body and the outrigger itself both have a beautiful glowing golden-red color that enhances the model, making it a work of art in addition to a realistic rendering of an incredibly important part of Micronesian life. Vessels of this style allowed people to gather food, see friends and family, and travel between islands easily. Although all Oceanic societies had their own version, the ones in the Caroline Islands were known as "prow", with the most commonly used one today known as "popow". Size: 8" L x 13.9" W x 2.75" H (20.3 cm x 35.3 cm x 7 cm)
