Lot 283A
North America, United States, Denver, Philadelphia, and San Francisco, ca. 1948 to 1963 CE. A striking ensemble of twenty-one Franklin Silver Half Dollars spanning dates from 1948 through 1963, representing the full early-to-late circulation period of the series. The coins feature Benjamin Franklin on the obverse and the Liberty Bell on the reverse, a design introduced shortly after World War II that reflected mid-century American ideals of liberty, industry, and civic virtue. Struck by the United States Mint from 1948 to 1963, Franklin half dollars circulated during a period of postwar economic expansion and Cold War-era history. In the wake of President John F. Kennedy's assassination on November 22, 1963, Congress and the Mint moved quickly to introduce a commemorative half dollar in his honor, and with its authorization on December 30, 1963, the Franklin series came to a close. Size (all the same): 1.25" Diameter (3.2 cm); silver quality: 90%; total weight: 260.9 grams
Each coin is composed of 90% silver and 10% copper, with an actual silver weight of approximately 0.3617 troy ounces per coin. This group offers both numismatic interest and intrinsic bullion value, making it appealing to collectors and silver investors alike.
On Franklin half dollars, a D mintmark indicates Denver and an S indicates San Francisco, both located above the Liberty Bell on the reverse, while no mintmark means Philadelphia. Included years: 1948 D (one); 1949 S (one); 1949 no mark (two); 1950 D (one); 1950 no mark (one); 1951 D (two); 1951 S (one); 1952 D (one); 1954 D (one); 1954 S (two); 1957 D (one); 1960 D (one); 1962 no mark (one); 1963 D (one); 1963 no mark (four).
