Description:

Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Paracas culture, ca. 500 to 300 BCE. A beautiful oblong vessel formed from a hollow gourd and skillfully decorated with flying bird deities comprised of intricate curvilinear, stippled, and geometric motifs. All is delineated via a pyrotechnic technique in black against the warm russet red hues of the gourd. Interestingly, the bird imagery works quite well with the elongated form of the vessel - reminding this art historian of Constantin Brancusi's "Bird in Space" (1928) - that legendary series in which the modernist emphasized the swell of an avian body, eliminated wings and feathers, and minimized the head and beak in order to capture the bird's dynamic movement! A magnificent and remarkably well-preserved piece from ancient Paracas that is 2300 years old! Size: 13.25" H (33.7 cm); 15.375" H (39.1 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-Gary Drimmer collection, Chicago, Illinois, USA
