United States, Fort Sumter, Charleston, South Carolina, ca. 1861. On April 12, 1861 Confederates bombarded Union soldiers stationed at this union fort. It was the start to 4 years of civil war that left 800,000 dead and millions more wounded. This cannonball was found in the rubble of the right gorge face of Fort Sumter in 1898. It was removed by the construction foreman during renovation of the fort. Massive and fascinating! Size: 24 pounds with a 6" diameter.
