Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chancay / Chimu, ca. 800 to 1400 CE. Three textiles in slit tapestry and painted cotton traditions. The first is a slit tapestry figure panel with a fringed lower edge, showing a stylized anthropomorphic being holding tridents that pierce a snake-like head, with birds aligned along the bottom border. The second is a wool slit tapestry fragment mounted on modern white cotton, its compact field presenting four abstract creatures interspersed with stepped shapes in strong, blocky color. The third is a painted cotton piece woven in tight tabby/plain weave, folded and sewn to create a thick double-layered main panel, with smaller layered tabs attached at the edge and finished with fringe. These tabs are intentionally filled with an organic stuffing that has crumbled and darkened with age; small fragments that have fallen out during handling suggest a fibrous or vegetal material, possibly including grain offerings or aromatic plant matter, though the exact contents remain unconfirmed. Size of painted textile : 46" L x 6" W (116.8 cm x 15.2 cm)
