Description:

Native American, Western / Pacific Northwest Coast United States, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A diverse collection of three baskets from various Native American cultures. The large bowl is of Pima origin, coiled with a foundation made from bundles of natural materials such as leaves or grass, stitched with splints crafted from plants like willow, yucca, and/or devil's claw. The lidded vessel is from the Pacific Northwest, attributed to the Nuu-chah-nulth (Nootka) or Makah tribes. It features a cedar bark foundation and various grasses, adorned with patterns such as the American flag and the year 1918, although the colors are faded and not easily discernible. The smallest basket is coiled, with the material unidentified but resembling grass. Its quail top knot feathers suggest a California origin, though the exact tribal affiliation remains undetermined. Size of large basket: 9.5" Diameter x 3" H (24.1 cm x 7.6 cm)

Provenance: private Los Angeles, California, USA collection
