Description:

Western Europe, probably Italy, Neoclassical period, ca. 19th century CE. A wonderful trio of jugate or double portrait cameos, each with a helmeted soldier in the foreground and a beardless figure in the mid-ground. Two are rectangular in form - one hand-carved from sage green stone and the other formed from translucent orange glass. The third and most petite is sculpted from banded agate and boasts hues of black, white, and burgundy. Jugate or double portraits were often used in antiquity, particularly for members of the Roman Imperial family. The format saw a revival in the 16th and 17th centuries and extended into the Neoclassical period. Size of largest (green stone): 0.6" W x 0.8" H (1.5 cm x 2 cm)
