Description:

**Originally Listed At $200**

Ancient Near East, Luristan, ca. 1st millennium BCE; Byzantine Empire, ca. 6th to 7th century CE. A group of three copper alloy objects spanning the ancient Near East and Byzantine world. The largest is an openwork bell from Luristan, cast from a copper-antimony alloy. Its flaring form, pierced with four elongated cutouts and topped with a rounded knop, would once have resonated with the metallic tones of its clapper, likely serving in ritual or ceremonial contexts in the Iranian highlands. From the Byzantine Empire comes a leaded bronze bell, its surface incised with diagonal linear patterns and fitted with a suspension loop for hanging, its sound marking time or devotional practice. Also Byzantine is a copper alloy belt buckle, ca. 6th to 7th century CE, with an ovate frame and incised decoration, once securing the belts that were essential to Byzantine dress. Collectively, these objects reflect the adaptability of copper alloys across cultures, valued for both utility and symbolic resonance. Size of largest (Luristan bell): 1.3" W x 1.8" H (3.3 cm x 4.6 cm)
