Description:

Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Narino Culture, ca. 750 to 1250 CE. A group of three hand-built redware pottery vessels from the highland Narino culture, each decorated in their signature resist-painted style. The largest vessel, globular with a flared rim, displays bold geometric motifs of cross-hatching and linear banding rendered in a dark slip against the burnished red ground. A smaller globular jar with rounded shoulders and an everted rim exhibits more delicate triangular and curvilinear motifs. Completing the group is a pedestal bowl, its flaring body raised on a tall foot, with concentric bands and wave-like patterns encircling the exterior. These vessels demonstrate the technical skill and aesthetic sophistication of Narino ceramicists, who created dynamic visual contrasts through negative resist painting and maintained a strong preference for geometric abstraction. Size of largest: 6.1" Diameter x 5.3" H (15.5 cm x 13.5 cm)

Provenance: private Colorado, USA collection; footed: ex-Leonard Auction, August 18, 2024, part of lot 165; ex-private Roselle, Illinois, USA collection; globular jars: ex-US auction house
