Description:

Western Europe, Neoclassical period, ca. 19th century CE. A wonderful trio of carved gems depicting traditional Classical themes. First, the largest stone features the incised image of a rearing centaur pulling the string of a bow. A monogram of the Greek letters lambda and kappa are shown below the figure. Next, the cameo boasts the high relief image or crouching or kneeling Venus (Greek Aphrodite), the Roman goddess of love and beauty, based on a Hellenistic model of Venus surprised at her bath. Last, the most petite gem displays a nude warrior, perhaps Achilles, wearing only a Corinthian helmet and cape as he strides right holding a sword and spear in his hands. All are easily set into a pendant or ring for wearable pieces of history! Size: 0.9" W x 1.4" H (2.3 cm x 3.6 cm)

Provenance: private Danvers, Massachusetts, USA collection, acquired by descent; ex-USA collection, acquired before 2000
