Description:

John Farnsworth (American, b. 1941). Eagle (oil on board), Ram (acrylic on board), and Cows (acrylic on canvas board), n.d. Artist's initial ("F") in lower left corner of 2 and upper right corner of 1. Artist's signature on verso of one. A delightful trio of paintings by self-taught artist John Farnsworth depicting animals: an oil on board of a golden eagle, an acrylic on board of a ram, and an acrylic on canvas board of cows. All present only the shoulders and heads of the animals, rendering their faces with intimate closeness in a manner usually reserved for portraits of humans. Though the painting of cows is a group portrait displaying 3 animals, the ram and golden eagle are both shown alone in their everyday settings: the ram in a wooden structure, perhaps a barn, and the eagle in the sky. Size of largest (golden eagle): 6" L x 6" W (15.2 cm x 15.2 cm); Size of frame (both the same): 7.8" L x 7.8" W (19.8 cm x 19.8 cm)

Artist Biographical Statement: "Born in Arizona in 1941, John Farnsworth is a mature artist and a painter's painter. Prolific in both watercolor and oils, Farnsworth paints with a contemporary eye and a traditional hand. His subject matter is without limit. From travel and landscapes to animal portraits, from still lifes to Kachinas, he paints his unique response to whatever catches his eye. Self taught, he works from life, sketches, photographs, and video. John paints using a limited palette that he calls the (Un)Limited Palette, consisting of just one of each of the primaries in watercolor, with white added when working in oil. He has painted full time since 1967 and his works range from small pencil drawings to the twenty by thirty foot mural 'Stage' now in the collection of the City of Phoenix, Arizona. Farnsworth has taught workshops in France, Mexico, Spain, Peru, Taos and Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Canyon de Chelly, Tucson and Tubac, Arizona. These workshops have covered such diverse subjects as Computers for Artists, Beginning Watercolor, The Horse in Three Colors, the (Un)Limited Palette, and Digital Photography." (artist's website)
