South Asia, India, Rajasthan, ca. early 19th century CE. A fantastic set of 32 hand-carved elephant bone chess pieces from Rajasthan, India, all displayed within a pair of lengthy modern wooden frames. Of intricate detailing and painted in hues of red, golden yellow, white, and black, each frame features a set of 16 chess pieces, enough for each side of the board to have a full army. Included in each frame are 8 padah (pawns) holding spears, flags, or horns; 2 ratha (rooks) with a pair of figures riding atop a petite elephant; 2 hasty (bishops) showing a rider atop a camel; 2 ashwa (knights) showing spear-wielding horse-riders; 1 mantri (queen) riding in a litter-adorned elephant; and 1 raja (king) riding in a similar elephant of a larger size. One frame contains an army painted in primarily white pigment, and the second frame contains an army adorned in primarily red pigment so both players could differentiate their pieces from those of their opponent. Size of largest pieces (kings): 1.5" W x 5.3" H (3.8 cm x 13.5 cm); (frames): 5.125" L x 32.75" W x 10.6" H (13 cm x 83.2 cm x 26.9 cm)

- Condition: Chess pieces are adhered within display frames and cannot be removed; therefore, pieces have not been examined outside of frames. Chess pieces have nicks, abrasions, and fading to surface pigment, with softening to some carved details, and perhaps some missing components which is difficult to discern without a physical examination. Great preservation to pigment and overall forms, especially for the kings and queens. Display frames have light abrasions and fading to pigment.
