Description:

North America, Southeastern United States, ca. mid to late 20th century CE. A collection of four hand-woven baskets and trays crafted from raffia and coiled pine needles, demonstrating traditional Southeastern weaving techniques. The group includes an oval openwork tray, a handled vessel with a twisted cord, and two rounded baskets with tightly stitched coil construction. The larger basket is dyed orange and purple, but has faded with sun exposure. Two baskets are hand woven by Bob and Sue Akers of Arkansas, in both of their pieces here, the tips of the needle sprigs protrude from the exterior to give a rustic and textured appearance. Pine needle weaving is a Native American tradition that experienced renewed popularity in the 1960s among artists inspired by historic forms, though the labor-intensive coiling process has led to its decline in recent decades. Size: 15" L x 8.5" W x 1.5" H (38.1 cm x 21.6 cm x 3.8 cm)
