Description:

Ancient Near East, Holy Land / Levant, Late Bronze Age to Iron Age, ca. 1550 to 200 BCE. A group of four terracotta oil lamps, each mold-formed in a distinctive shell-shaped design with shallow, flared bodies and pinched spouts. These lamps echo the natural contours of a bivalve shell - The form is not only aesthetically pleasing but also functional - providing a stable basin for oil and a wick channel. This style is characteristic of Late Bronze Age domestic wares from the Levant, where such lighting implements were vital in homes, sanctuaries, and tombs. Their organic silhouettes and weathered surfaces speak to centuries of ritual use and daily life in the ancient Holy Land, and examples like these are often cited in both archaeological reports and Biblical references.
