Lot 4
Kazumasa Ogawa , also Ogawa Kazumasa, Ogawa Kazuma or Ogawa Isshin (Japanese, 1860-1929). Four colored collotypes: "Lotus," "Japanese Iris," "Lily," and "Tree Peony," 1896. Accompanied by book: "Some Japanese Flowers: Photographs by Kazumasa Ogawa" (Los Angeles: The J. Paul Getty Trust, 2013). A beautiful ensemble of four colored collotypes by Japanese photographer Kazumasa Ogawa, each depicting a detailed close-up of a flower from his 1896 book titled "Some Japanese Flowers," which is now located in the J. Paul Getty Museum. Between 1894 and 1896, Ogawa produced a three-part series of photographs of native Japanese flowers, which were sold to foreign visitors. Through isolating the subject in close range, and utilizing the chromo-collotype technique, Ogawa produced still-life photographs with a highly modern aesthetic. Size of largest image (Lily): 9" W x 10.75" H (22.9 cm x 27.3 cm); of frame (all the same): 19" W x 23" H (48.3 cm x 58.4 cm)
More colorful than any photograph that had come before them, his work contributed to the Western perception of Meiji-era Japan as a source of new inspiration for design.
Kazumasa Ogawa was a pioneering photographer and printer, and the foremost photography publisher in Japan during the Meiji era. The editor of "Shashin Shimpo," he opened Tokyo's first photography studio, established Japan's first collotype press, and was a founding member of the Japan Photographic Society, the nation's first amateur photography association. Captivated in his youth by the new technology of photography, Ogawa became one of the most enterprising and important early photographers, technicians, and printers in Japan. Born shortly before the Meiji era (1868-1912), or period of "enlightened rule," and educated in both the United States and Japan, Ogawa produced a range of illustrated books for the Western market. His work focused on traditional architecture, scenic views, and subjects associated with Japanese culture, such as national festivals, military tableaux, ritual customs, costumed geisha, and flowers.
This collection includes Plate 9 "Lotus," Plate 10 "Japanese Iris," Plate 32 "Lily," and a reverse of Plate 17 "Tree Peony."
